The problem here is that "compounding" has a much wider meaning. It only
acquires this rather special flavour in the context of a
pharmacy/chemist. I suppose that if it is always on a chemist/pharmacy
perhaps that will provide the context.

In the UK, I think the original historical meaning of a Chemist (shop)
was a place that not only supplied raw ingredients, but also mixed and
perhaps prepared products (including where reactions were involved). 
Which seems to match what compounding means if I have understood
correctly. But that seems to be lost in the mists of time...
