I finally got the Swiss instance updated and it now installs indeed very smoothly.
There were two things I still had to tweak manually: One is the number of maximum
objects that are allowed so that the XAPI/JOSM links still work. It can be much
higher because we are using a special Swiss XAPI instance which can handle larger
requests easily. The other is the number of objects needed that make a key
'interesting'. Naturally, that must be set much lower for country excerpts.
One more thing that would be nice to have is that the XAPI/JOSM links respect the
filter settings, e.g if the list is filtered by ways only, the link should be
something like: .../xapi/api/0.6/way[foo=*]. This would come in handy when one
tries to find wrongly tagged objects, e.g. a highway=unclassified on a node.
