Short answer is: You have to update everything or you are on your own.

Long answer: Taginfo is a complex beast with many interlocking parts and it is
really difficult to keep it all in sync, more so if a bunch of machines is
involved that run versions that might be years old. I am trying to get this
right in the limited time I have for it, but it doesn't always work out.

You can probably hot fix this in your setup by keeping the old version and
just removing every mention of "project_counts" in sources/master/master.sql.
I think this will allow you to run the updates, but I am not promising anything.
And it will make it even more difficult to update later.

Long term the best solution for you would be to get your changes into upstream.
Over the years I have added quite a few changes only needed by some sites and
made certain things configurable. I can't promise I'll add in whatever you
need, but we can cetainly talk about it and see where I can help out that the
changes you need ar minimised.
