When I mapped the Nullarbor, I did it in extremely long ways.  I know at
least some of them were ~200km long.  When there's not much along the
way, I don't see it being a huge problem.

Likewise, I'd say that placing nodes infrequently is fine for a
completely straight road, just as long as you put them in more closely
for any bends.
