I was only talking about straightish sections. Also shift click in josm or potlatch puts a node on a way where you want without adding a new way.
Just that if the points are not lined up you end up with straight roads that are like /\/\/\ bit of exageration but you should get the idea.

Good reason to use josm, as it works on all ways and removes excess nodes on curves as well as straight roads. It also has Align nodes in line and circle.
