I've been using the same OSM into Qgis into mapinfo setup to do this sort of thing but making the rivers have width in mapinfo rather than changing the data in OSM for three reasons:
* I want to be sure any changes I make don't affect the base map UNLESS I'm absolutely positive my changes are accurite.
* anything you change in the base data will offend someone
* I find editing in mapinfo far simpler than the alternatives.
