[talk-au] White Pages using OSM map - with accreditation

I think there was brief discussion on talk-au last year. I noted that
anyone could use a favourite search engine to search for the many
articles about copyright in the yellow and white pages. You will find
articles such as
http://www.mondaq.com/australia/x/95894/Copyright/Copyright+in+Databases+No+Copyright+in+White+and+Yellow+Pages

The Federal Court of Australia ruled there was no copyright in the
printed editions of the yellow pages and white pages. (but I think there
may still be copyright in the webpages - not sure). The decision was
appealed and the Full Bench of the Federal Court upheld the previous
decision. An appeal to the High Court has been refused
(http://simpsons.com.au/telstra-to-bend-the-ear-of-commonwealth-attorney-general-over-copyright/
)

I think that effectively places the yellow pages and white pages printed
editions in the public domain and the information can be used by anyone
for any purpose. However another mapper counselled against using the
data in OSM in case there were other legal issues.

Unless there have been subsequent developments, the court decision
might also raise questions about OSM's assertion of its database
copyright under Australian law.
