In lots of places, the boundaries of the river, local government areas, reserves and tree cover are all mapped differently, creating a mess of intertwining boundaries. I hope I’m not offending anyone who has done great work on the river in the past.
Please do not join tree covers to administration boundaries nor to park boundaries etc.
Be very careful of the administration boundaries ... these use sources OSM has legally available.
Best to become familiar with the editor you chose.
With some you can 'layer' things .. one 'layer' can be the administration boundaries, park boundaries etc. Another 'layer' can be trees, river banks, scrub, etc.
This helps stop one thing be attached to an unrelated object.
Note: some parks have also been tagged as an area of trees using both tags on the single area. Usually trees do not start and stop at a park boundary.
Feel free to remove the tree tag from the park and make a new area for the trees.

(I worked as a research scientist for 25 years before I retired, but not in spatial sciences, so I’m used to working accurately and methodically on big projects). More to the point, if the task is worthwhile, is it possible to invite a mentor or two to provide advice and feedback on techniques and results before I make any big changes, so the results reach your high standards?
Work on what interest you. If your interested in it then go for it.
Best to ask here. You 'll get more diverse views, and perhaps some local knowledge. And initial responses may well be quicker.
The 'standards' vary greatly across the land.
At times I map with 0.5 meter precision, at other times it is 100 meters or more. Depends on the time available, the size of the problem and the impact of the object.

No, thank you for your interest. Happy mapping.
