Collaborating with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), I've set up MapRoulette challenges which identify tracks (highway=track) which appear in government datasets but are missing in OSM.
The code to produce these challenges and the documentation of source data and waivers is at https://gitlab.com/alantgeo/gov2osm-tracks-conflation/ <https://gitlab.com/alantgeo/gov2osm-tracks-conflation/-/tree/master>.
Where the suggested track can be confirmed with another source like aerial/satellite imagery or street level imagery, it could be added to OSM.
If editing with JOSM, with RemoteControl enabled, the way is added into the editor via MapRoulette. iD doesn't support this yet so using iD requires re-tracing the way from imagery. Alternatively RapID may have an AI generated way which if matching the imagery and government data could be used.
Care must still be taken to assess the classification, if the track is still active, and to join to the rest of the road network.
If you're interested, please feel free to join in the challenges, broken down by state:
VIC (Strategically Important Fire Trails) https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20216
- attributes from the source have been included, but if unsure they don't need to be brought across
VIC (Vicmap all tracks) https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20183
- attributes from the source have been included, but if unsure they don't need to be brought across
ACT https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20137
- no attributes included, mappers can choose the road classification
NSW (NPWS) https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20164
- attributes from the source have been included, but if unsure they don't need to be brought across
NSW (Classified Fire Trails) https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20232
- no attributes included, mappers can choose the road classification
SA https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20182
- attributes from the source have been included, but if unsure they don't need to be brought across
WA https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/20302
- name included, but if descriptive and unsure it can be omitted
Any feedback is appreciated.
