[talk-au] Tagging one lane cattle grids

On my recent outback NSW trip I came across many one lane cattle grids. These are explicitly signposted as one lane (and are only wide enough for one vehicle).
In the past I have tagged these on the node as:
barrier=cattle_grid
lanes=1
(The lanes tag is generally used on ways rather than nodes.)
Is there a better way to tag this on the node?
Alternatively, should I split the way on either side of the grid, and add lanes=1 to the short segment of road that crosses the grid? (The remainder of the road is not one lane.)
