[OSM-talk-be] the state of OpenStreetmap in Antwerpen

As I needed to extract all the streets from Antwerpen from the OSM
database (needed for a custom streetfinder - see previous mail), I
wanted to compare the list of streets with the 'official streetname
list' of Antwerpen.
The official streetname list is an official and open document. It is
presented on the city of Antwerpen website as a PDF document.
Antwerpen has something over 3000 streets. I didn't want to compare them
manualy and decided this was something for a computer to do...
I converted the PDF document to a TXT document, and had a simple perl
script extracting all the streetnames and postcodes.
Most of the streets are converted fine, some got corrupted trough the
whole process. This is particularly the case for streetnames having
signs with a 'trema' (ë ü ï) in it.
I had a script comparing the streetnames from the official list with the
names from the OSM database.
This is the summarized result:

Some remarks on 'wrong results':
Streets falsely marked: streets that come out of the official list with
'extra descriptions' like 'pair numbers' or 'nr. 75 to 85'; streets that
are still in the official streetlist but are no real streets
(Falcompoort, is just a – closed – gate) or are disappeared (4 streets
now occupied by the MAS building warf), also some streets containing
special characters like d'Herbouville.
Streets falsely not marked:
our script will do a lookup of every street from the official list in
the OSM database. If the street is found within the OSM name it will not
appear. For instance Meir would also match 'Meirbrug'. If meir would not
be on the map, it would not be displayed.
If a long street is mapped in different parts, and one part is named
correctly, the name will not appear in the list.
The list of 'missing' streetnames, with postcode, is available in CSV
file on
http://www.bb2000.be/stratenzoeker/vergelijkstraten.csv
This is based on the streets available in openstreetmap on 2nd of august
2008.
I'll try to make an updated list something like monthly...
Who is doing mapping in Antwerpen, and knows some streets, might have a
look at the list.
Streets on this list are (either)
- misspelled
- tagged with wrong name
- unnamed
- missing
Unless something went wrong with the transformations.
Luc.
