I have an Etrex. I din't know there were USB cables available, but seeing that one costs 60 euro and that a USB to serial converter can be had for 10, I think I'll rather try that.

What GPS doe you have? I have a gecko 201 and bought a USB-cable at
http://www.gps.nl/geko_accessoires.html (USB-eplug kabel)
Works perfect on Linux and Vista.
