I would go for a QStarz BT1000 for around €100 or the next model for
€110. There are some units of another brand that you can loan though.
Maybe it's better to do that before you commit yourself to buying a device.

I find that when I go out mapping by bicycle at a medium speed of around
10km/h (I tend to stop all the time for taking pictures and I make a lot
of stubs by entering most of the side streets for making a picture of
their type and name), I use about the same time the cycle trip took.
This is for virgin areas and adding relations on top to indicate where
the cycle routes are. When somebody passed there already it's a lot
quicker and it's also less time consuming if you're not putting cycle
routes, bus routes and walking routes on top.

You can expect between 10 and 15 people. The previous time it was just
below 10. You'll get more if you make more publicity

If you have a garden and chairs and maybe a few tables, this might work.
We would also like to eat though :-). Of course we could get together in
a pub in the morning. Another place where there is food in the
afternoon, then map some more and go to your place to enter data in the
afternoon.

Are there no pubs at all that you know of in Turnhout with a little room
and an internet connection that we could use simply in return for the
consumptions? If you explain the purpose, you will find quite a few
people/ café owners are open to having their town mapped (and selling
food and drinks to a bunch of weirdos :-) You can always say that going
out mapping makes us hungry and thirsty...
