[OSM-talk-be] Mapping blank areas - some remarks

Hi all,

This weekend - it was nice weather for a motorbike tour - I have been
mapping a part of the mostly white area on the borders of Antwerpen /
Brabant / Limburg (Veerle - Tessenderlo - Diest - Beringen -
Leopoldsburg - Balen).

Some remarks on what I encountered on the map:

Someone made the effort to mark the max-speed with the roads, but where
the max speed changes also the clasification of the road changed.
Secondary road becomes tertiary where speed drops to 50, and residential
where it is 30...

I guess a roads clasification has nothing to do with the speed limit.
The only drawback of this method would be that once OSM would get used
for routing routes would be created trough realy residential areas
instead of using the main road.

In Diest I had to erase part of the railway line to Aarschot. It was
drawn on the map pretty much as a straight line from Diest to Testelt,
although in reality the railway makes a large turn around a small
mountain. On the current map the railway was crossing a lot of roads
that in reality it does not cross.

If one maps 'blank areas' one should try to split up the track into the
individual roads as much as possible.

One question about a specific road situation. It is about the N2, Diest
- Hasselt in Kermt.

This road has a kind of 'middenberm' with one-way lanes on both sides.
The middle part, however, consists mostly of nature stone, on the same
level as the road, and can be crossed at all places. On some places
there may be a tree in the middle.

Should this be mapped as 2 single one way roads (then one should have to
map quite a lot of crossovers in between) or as just one double
direction road? Personally I would prefer the last one.

Luc.

PS. Who wants to join for a motorbike tour (NO PASSENGERS!) in that aera
let me know. Would like to enjoy as much as possible of the late
summertime on the motorbike, and there are pretty much of nice roads in
that area to be mapped.
