I found this course, seems an overview of the Geo applicattion fields.

The fine thing is: Quadtrees are in it, and a lot of stuff I'd even not 
thought about (well, that's obvious,  I've been into 
mathematics/research on algorithms in the numerical field...  and I find 
fractals back, my former phd subject. )
Fractals can be used to generate quasi realistic images of surfaces...
