I think I read that the namefinder on openstreetmap.org is hopelessly 
outdated, running on a database of at least a few months old.

OSM mapnik is updated a lot more often these days. Often within the 
hour, sometimes it takes longer, because of caching of tiles, before you 
see the updates. And then it can vary per zoom level.
