Adding a node to a way is document in
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Potlatch2/Primer
"To add a point to an existing way, select the way and shift+click at
the desired location."

To merge, I would delete (click Delete button or press Backspace) one
node and connect with the other if necessary.
