I give you an extract of the OSM wiki ( I hope you can see the different
colors in this text below or go to whatever page with the word hiking or
foot.)

Hiking routes are extensively mapped with route relations, and the Lonvia
map <http://osm.lonvia.de/hiking.html> will render route relations
following this proposal and the
osmc:symbol<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:osmc:symbol>

Instead of the tag route <http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:route>=
hiking <http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:route%3Dhiking> there is
less frequently also used route<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:route>
=foot<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:route%3Dfoot&action=edit&redlink=1>
