Keep asking the developers of  Potlatch to support what's used in the
field. Over and over again. Explain to them that halfwitted solutions like
trying to compute the node numbers don't cut it. Especially as that
calculation fails most of the time.

They'll have to give in eventually, hopefully some day soon. Of course, if
they don't get to hear that their users are suffering because their users
don't give them the necessary feedback, it will never be solved. I told
them often enough by now. I most certainly tried.

You fail to see why name can't be used instead of note, not because note
makes more sense as those relations simply don't have a name, but rather
because your editor of choice doesn't show that. I fail to understand how
the developers of Potlatch can disregard and ignore the way we tag those
route relations of which the number is nearing 12000 and rising. And why
they feel the need to leave the users of their editor out in the cold.

JOSM has a mapcss style to mimic Potlatch. It's even possible to make it
work without its modes, so a lot more like Potlatch.

If you like to give it a try, I can sit down with you for an evening to get
you started with it. I assure you, there are only advantages and once you
do get used to it, you'll never want to go back to Potlatch.

I don't say Potlatch is bad. It's OK to make minor quick changes, but it's
rather limiting for the real work.
