there are several questions in one:

in osm or not ? it is a geological concept, it has in my opinion as much
its place as a place=locality, provided to find a valid source to add it

source for the name and the approximate position : many contributors can
put a node somewhere in the Ardenne, so the source is not a problem.
it's been 3 years since someone added it
https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/5556058764/history

main tag: it's not a mountain range since there are no mountains,
it's a geological region, some people have used place=region for
similar concepts, this seems better to me

define the geographical extent
in these cases, I often refer to the source since it is the one that
allows to manage the editing conflicts. Floriand's changeset source:
source=survey : so he would have seen the different signs indicating
"welcome to the Ardenne" (there are some for example on E411way), if so,
he might as well indicate them, and if there are enough of them, this
forms a possible source to define the extent. but no sign was indicated
in the changeset of version 1.
source=local knownledge but he says himself that he doesn't know the
extent, so this source is not relevant, the extent has changed in the
meantime.
so he doesn't really have a source (and in my opinion the real source is
another, like WP)
Personally, despite the number of the weeks I spend there, I am not able
to define the precise extent and I even doubt that such an extent exists
(on the border, there are always people to say that such a village is
still in the Ardennes and others to say that it is not).
that's the main issue imho : osm doesn't have a MP role "maybe" to
define the grey-zone.
but if a mapper si able to define an extend with a valid source and
if nobody is against this extend with another valid source, that's fine.

Regards,
Marc
