Hey Sam.
Here's a brief declaimer Jason sent me for the Nanaimo data:
http://www.nanaimo.ca/EN/main/departments/Engineering-Public-Works/4489/Disclaimer.html
It's your basic 'cover you butt' kinda thing.

Hi Michael Barabanov, (cc:talk-ca list.)

Would you be able to process the Nanaimo tile 092g04 and 092f01?, you
don't need to run road matcher, But it would be great to just have it
available, and a link to it on the wiki.
I'll process the CanVec Verson of the data areas, just to see it. (but
not upload).

I think I'll try to meet Jason in person in the next couple of weeks,
as this is GREAT news for OSM. :-) ... and there's also other mappers
up island, so it would be good to have a mapping party then.

Im just taking a look at the shape files now. Cool :) Technically,
it looks easy to convert and import, and attach the right tags to it.

At 1st glance on the city website, i don't see where it says "this
data is free to use, and mess-up / modify change as much as you like,
as long as you stick the 'came from ...' attribution tag somewhere,
we'll be happy.". ... So of course, we follow the standard rules with
any import :)

I'm forwarding this to Richard Weait, as well as Corey Burger who will
also be interested in learning about this. In efforts to talk to other
cities about this. .... but fortunately for the OSM community, the
cities will find us as the map gets better, and 'cause it's a win-win
:)

Cheers,
Sam Vekemans

Hi geobase:acrosscanadatrails,

Jamie Popkin has sent you a message through OpenStreetMap with the
subject Re: Hi:

I agree Sam... It's a great step forward.

We owe it all to Jason Birch who is head of department at the City of
Nanaimo. A while back Time Magazine declared Nanaimo to be the "Google
Capital of the World"(
http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1720932,00.html ). Which
is all due to Jason's proactive and open approach to managing their
spatial data. He has been trying to integrate their official
centerlines into OSM for quite some time. Once he heard I'd being
doing some work in the area he asked me if I was interested.

All the city data is available for public download:
