"Barcelona because of the combination with FOSS4G: OSM will not be the
centre of attention"

With all due respect, I disagree on that first point. While FOSS4G 2010
will likely draw in over 1000 attendees and maybe that'll be more than
SoTM will draw (which would make the point that SoTM may not be the
centre of attention sort of valid), I believe the synergy effect of
having the two events together would outweigh the "shadow" caused by the
nearby presence of FOSS4G. My take on a joint event is that the
combined attendance of the two events would rise and cross-pollination
will occur because of the shared philosophical stance of the events.

I'm not going to linger on too long on how interdependent both
communities are : one is providing FOSS, the other free data. I'll just
point you guys to Schuyler Erle's brilliant 5-minute presentation at
FOSS4G 2008 : http://www.vimeo.com/1841244 Schuyler's leitmotiv : free
software is useless without free data. Please SoTM board : go see that
presentation.

As a side note, Schuyler was one of the organizers of the Cape Town
mapping party in 2008.

All the best,

Yves
