Hi Sam,

You wrote "canvec.osm files will be available as neat-small & combined .1x .1degree". Well, we are not sure yet. This one size fits all might be too large for high feature density area, and too small than necessary for uninhabited areas.

We are looking at QuadTree tiling oriented to ease JOSM edits/uploads (1). Once setup, we will provide the community with some dataset examples to get feedbacks.

- rhetorical point of view. What should be the area of interest of an Osm mapper? The streets he drives every days? Once a year? The area around these streets? With a 1, 2, 5, 10 km buffer? Somewhere he went few years ago, or somewhere he wishes to go next year?

Cheers :-)

Daniel

Note (1): if any of you have an idea about a mesure that would define a nice tile to work with (number of nodes, of ways, of relation members, ...) then let me know!

Subject: [Talk-ca] CanVec Import method

Hi all,
With the recient sucess of the talk-gb folks being able to create & host their own version of what we have as 'Toporama', i think that it is time i change the wiki and update that broadcast note that i put on many Canada mappers wiki pages. (copying the recomendations on the [[OS import]] wiki page)

We all know that the canvec .osm files will be available as neat-small & combined .1x .1degree files.

We also know that the prefered method is for "Myself to let & notify local area mappers know that i wont import it on their head. ... And ask 1st" Perhaps i could notify everyone of Toporama's existance?
Thoughts?

And the UK's method is to broadcast the WMS layers existance to everyone so that everyone works in their local area & uses the service just as we use(d) yahoo imagery and landsat imagery to build up the map.

So maybe its not needed to keep track on the GoogleDocs chart?

We have the advantage because we have both, the Toporama AND the canvec .osm files.

Anyway, the method of using WMS as well as the CanVec files, should make people realize that the import wont happen around their area ....
Unless they trace it or copy it in themselves.

(rhetorical) What right do I have for copying data for areas (outside the Trans Canada Trail, and my proposed alternates, 1km on eithor side?). Answer: None. Because I wont be actually survaying it. The local trail/road users will do that.

Cheers,
Sam Vekemans
