Hi Steve,
Sure I'd be happy todo a presentation in Victoria, I cc'd the
talk-ca at openstreetmap.org message list,

I am one of many of the talk-ca team who is working on the Canada map.
Currently, i'm working on converting the Ibycus Topo map
http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/
Which was derrived directly from Natural resources Canada, and contains the
data in Garmin GPS format. This same datasource, is what is currently in
the process of getting converted & imported into OpenStreetMap.
I am taking just the contours from that map and creating a transparent
'contour-only' Garmin GPS map for all of Canada.

Frank is currently, the one who has taken on the lead roal in the technical
conversion process of analyzing & organizing the data which is available
from the CanVec dataset (geogratis) as well as looking at the similar
features from the GeoBase dataset. This takes a higher GIS background
(using postGIS & python scripting) knowledge than i have. So it's great
that he has taken on this task.

The talk-ca group is an informal 'working group' where we all share and pass
ideas across to the whole list. It's a diverse group of people, which
include people from Natural Resources Canada, GeoBase, GeoBC. Along with
those GPS inthusiasts who want to make a better Garmin Map, Such as
GeoCashers and trail hikers.

Richard Weait is the (self-designated) liaison who has met personally with
the folks of GeoBase & Natural Resources Canada, he is a free-software
expert and is well aware of what is going on. So i'd also recommend his
input.

There is also a few other folks in the Victoria area & in the lower mainland
Vho have a GIS background, and might also be able to assist, for technical
information. (all of which are on this mailing list)

Similar to the national level, we also have data which is available from
Land Information Ontario. I have direct permission to upload the data to
OSM, however, just like how in the Province of BC, there are many duplicates
of data, with varring degrees of accuracy & completeness and variety of
information available. So our priority is to get the 'basemap' from
natural resources Canada imported, then 'feed-in' the other datasets that
are available.

I'll be in Toronto next week, so i'll be happy to give you a call mid-week.

What time of day is best to reach you?
Regards,

Sam Vekemans
