Hosting and serving large collections of aerial imagery is outside the
normal goals of OpenStreetMap, though OSMers certainly find aerial
imagery useful when it is licensed appropriately.
OpenAerialMap.org, on the other hand, is exactly the place for large
collections of aerial imagery. OpenAerialMap has been "rebooting"
since last July and may even come back on line. It ran as a demo for
about nine months, then suffered from too much success, as requests
came in to host larger and more data sets. Those with an interest,
and with server / bandwidth resources, should absolutely get involved.
There is an OpenAerialMap workshop at State of the Map next week.
