Richard,

This is more general than how I would like to render my individual map. I think that it refers to the general tagging schema of Openstreetmap for entities such as island and lakes.

If you look at Liberty island in the port of New-York. You see that, with Mapnik, the name of the island is well rendered at zoom level 13. The name is ever bigger than the island.

For the Great Lakes, also, we cannot see the names on the OSM maps.

Thats bring more questions.

Are they any tags that could permit a certain hierarchisation for rendering of entities like we have for city names?

Is this non representation of entities like Great Lakes or important island is a choice that have been clearly expressed in the Openstreetmap community?

If not, in wich instance, should we discuss about that?
