[Talk-ca] Holidays mapping - prepare in advance :)

Hi

I will spending some days in St-Michel-des-Saints, definitely bringing
the Android tablet + phone for some on-the-side surveying.

I would bet lots of you on this list will be going to some uncharted
territory across Canada :) Or just visiting the neighbors. Is your
street well covered in OpenStreetMap?

I thought I'd share this neat, easy way to prepare for such mapping:
- Use http://walking-papers.org/ and the "Cloudmade: noname" provider to
get nice prints of maps clearly indicating streets/roads without names
(in red)
- Print a few copies of the area you'll be visiting for friends/kids -
sometimes they will know features not present in any map
- If using an Android device, download your area maps in advance.
Offline maps are great when no 3G/data coverage is possible. OSMAnd~ can
provide such maps including routing and GPS "follow me". OSMTracker can
also be useful for basic GPS tracks recording. Both are free open source
software.

Printing a few more copies or Walking papers maps is also a great way to
get the OpenStreetMap project known among locals. If the map is really
up-to-date, it looks impressive. If it's not, then you explain why
you're doing mapping: win-win :) Maybe even get a second invitation to
come back and focus on mapping?

Cheers,

Fabian R.
