Good Afternoon Everyone,
I've been lurking on the MkGMap developers list for several months now and see that recently, they have solved some major issues regarding finding streets when OSM is imported for use on Garmin GPS's... without the use of MapSource! They are now moving on to the problem of locating by house number. That's a great accomplishment and the developers deserve a lot of credit.!!! Very well done.
Don't know if anyone else has been playing with this, but in short, there may need to be some Canadian-specific tweaks placed into the default style files that are packaged with MkGMap. Through adjustments to the MkGMap command line options, I've been able get the location function to work fairly well in my Nuvi 255, but have run into the issue where I can find Granville Street in "Vancouver" but Hastings Street can only be found under "Gastown" and Dundas Street under "Capitol Hill". These should all be found in Vancouver.
My first guess is that the administrative boundary levels need to be tweaked, not in OSM but in the MkGMap style files where some recasting can take place. They already have country-specific tweaks for about 20 European countries but nothing for Canada yet.
I was just wondering if anyone has a customized MkGMap style file that works logically with the way administrative boundaries have been set up in Canada? If so, and we can show that it works well with r2179, their most recent stable version, we could probably pass it on to them for inclusion in the packaged style files so that the location function will work by default on Canadian extracts. Assuming you're willing to share of course :)
Thanks...
