The only thing undermining this equivalence is that many existing OSM 
data consumers aim to support multiple or all regions, and most 
English-speaking regions already expand quadrant suffixes where they 
occur. This will continue to be the case regardless of whether Alberta's 
quadrants are abbreviated or expanded.

I previously held up Mapbox Streets and OpenMapTiles as being capable of 
automatic abbreviation in English, but there are major languages for 
which they don't automatically abbreviate street name types and 
directions. That's indeed a shortcoming of the software, not the data.

By the way, is the preferred form "NW" or "N.W."? Earlier posts in this 
thread were describing signs as being definitive, but the Ministry of 
Transportation seems to specify "N.W." in its sign standard. [1] 
Including periods when abbreviating may seem quaint, but from a data 
consumer's standpoint, periods could probably help to reduce ambiguity, 
especially on cardinal directions.
