The advantages of being "the OSMF national chapter for Germany" are not
very tangible to the community - being larger than any other national
OSM community in the world, we *can* exist perfectly well without OSMF
support. If OSMF ceased to exist today and all servers are switched off,
we'd have a replacement two days later.

We - or at least, many of us - feel that we should still become an OSMF
national chapter because that way we support what OSMF does for the
project as a whole, and also support the project in areas that are less
well off OSM-wise than we are.

We would affiliate ourselves with OSMF more out of solidarity than
because we think we have something to gain from it. And I think that's
perfectly ok!

This does not mean however giving away our identity - we will still be
the German community and we will still be independent of OSMF and we
still want to be sure that if OSMF breaks down we can continue as
before. We, the German OSM community, can run the whole of OSM Germany
including all servers and all mapping activity ourselves if we have to.
We don't aim to, but the thought gives us security.

Gedanke gibt Sicherheit.)

If you believe that you, personally, could run all the servers and do
all the mapping in the relevant geographic areas, then that analogy
would hold. But I don't think you believe that. I think it is ok if
those who run OSM in a country also have the domain name.

Bye
Frederik
