If I (Google) understands correctly, you ask why the tickets are so
expensive?

Three day passport tickets for OSM Community members are €100.  For the cost
of 40 pints of German lager [1] you get access to 3 days of talks and
workshops.  There two streams with over 50 talks scheduled over the weekend
along with 4 workshops that let you dive deep into OpenStreetMap.  The
ticket price also includes lunch and refreshments on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday.

The proceeds from ticket sales and sponsorship cover the cost of the venue,
some equipment and refreshments and also contribute funding to the OSM
Foundation, which uses funding from events like SOTM to buy servers and
support other mapping activities.  All of the organization for SOTM is
undertaken by a group of volunteers from the OSM Foundation at no cost to
the OSM-F.

All in all, participants at the last two SOTMs have found the weekend to be
great value.  Not only do you get to hear about the latest developments in
OSM hacking and mapping, you get to hang out with fellow mappers.  One of my
personal highlights from previous year's conferences has been meeting other
OSMers from around the world - so please come along and make this year
another great year!
