It's objectively worse imo. Cgi mechs lack any  sense of tension in action scenes. They don't get scratched up, their surfaces don't get smeared with dirt, gradually more  damaged over time, random pieces  ripped off exposing  wire and  circuitry. They don't interact enough with the  environment and when they  melee  one  another it's just  awkward.

Until they master cgi to the level of Pixar and Dreamworks the 2000-2010s will  forever  be a lost period where shit  looks  terrible, similar to American  film  cgi from  the early 80s to  mid 90s.
