Actually, nominatim has an abbreviation database that it automatically 
consults. But this mechanism assumes that the full long is in OSM and 
the user enters an abbreviation, not the other way around. So the 
current Estonian policy breaks it :(.

This is actually an interesting question in itself: "A. Laikmaa" as it 
is now or better "Ants Laikmaa" without abbreviation?

I would definitely like to keep this discussion going. I still think 
there is a strong case for no abbreviations, internationally, including 
Estonia.
