[Talk-ee] Gargae48 hackathon at TTU 28th November

Hi Jaak,

Thanks for your support. I have done some preliminary research and see that
there are some possibilities already in OSM
(http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Wheelchair_routing#Goal:_building_a_rout
ing_portal_for_wheelchair_users) but most of what is written there is not so
clear to me. I am not “technical” unfortunately.

I do hope that there will be some enthusiasm from the OSM community in
Estonia as this is a really worthwhile project and even if it is not
successful at Garge48 I would like to drive it forwards anyway.

Fingers crossed, I will get some more response from the Talk.ee list

All the best,

Eric Bowman

Hi,

Great idea. Without doubt Manuel is the greatest technical expert in OSM,
routing [1] and even wheelchair mapping in Estonia. He should be in the
talk-ee list, just to be sure he gets your message I’m cc-ing him separately
also.

Dear All,

I hope this is not regarded as spam.

I am attending the Garage48 hackathon at TTÜ on 28th/29th November, hoping
to push a project regarding mapping and routing for wheelchair users across
Estonia.

The concept is to create a mapping app that can tie into an already
available map system (OSM?) and provide routing for wheelchair users. I.e.
the ability to plan street routes from point to point in Tallinn (anywhere
eventually but let’s start with a realistic target!) that are specifically
planned to follow wheelchair friendly routes, dropped kerbs, easy to
navigate road junctions, accessible bus and trolley stops etc.

The goal is that a wheelchair user can open the app, pick a destination and
be given a wheelchair friendly route to that destination.

This is not the same route an able bodied walker could use. A wheelchair
user will be stopped dead by a 10cm high kerb stone with no way up onto the
pavement. An able bodied walker probably wouldn’t even notice that they had
stepped up the kerb
 J

To create this app will require mapping/routing experts who have the
knowledge and skills required to use OSM data to create route plans.

If there are any readers of this mailing list who would be interested in
participating in the garage48 hackathon, and specifically working on this
project, then please get back to me and/or register for garage48 at this
link:

Thanks for your time!

Eric Bowman
