[OSM-talk-fr] Road Network Improvements in France

Je vais répondre à titre personnel. Merci de nous avoir contacté avant de
faire quoi que ce soit à large échelle. Bien sûr une traduction française
est nécessaire pour avoir des retours pertinents. Je répond en français et
en anglais pour être sûr que mon avis soit reçu mais ne pas s'étonner si
les discussions se poursuivent en français. Cette liste de diffusion est un
bon canal de discussion.

Tout d'abord je ne vois pas pourquoi vous ne pourriez pas ajouter ou
réaligner des routes n'importe où dans le monde tant que vous le faites
correctement tant que ce n'est pas automatisé. OSM est un projet ouvert,
ajouter une route ou réaligner une route ne devrait choquer personne.

Maintenant pour ce qui est de toucher à la classification des routes...
pour faire court je m'abstiendrai d'intervenir à l'étranger. Le réseau
français est le résultat d'une communauté active et investie partageant ses
connaissances locales, discutant et ayant accès à des sources aériennes et
publiques ouvertes de qualité croissante. Par ailleurs plusieurs outils ont
été développés et sont maintenus par des contributeurs français afin de
détecter des améliorations possibles et faire de la veille qualité, Osmose
étant l'un d'eux pour le réseau routier (même si ouvert au monde il est
très paramétré en France). Ensuite, notre communauté est très active et la
classification des routes est l'un de ces sujets qui revient réguliérement
sur cette liste. J'ai le sentiment que nous avons trouvé un point de
fonctionnement prennant en compte les définitions générales OSM et les
spécificités françaises. Je ne pense pas que faire intervenir dedans un
point de vue étranger et distant puisse apporter du bon ici mais je peux me
tromper. Cela créera probablement d'avantage de guerres d'éditions. Bien
entendu si vous détectez quelque chose que vous pensez mal classé, partagez
le sujet ici (en français) avant de conclure que l'imagerie n'est pas
trompeuse et à jour.

Par conséquent j'ai quelques questions concernant la classification des
routes :

   1. Avez-vous une étude comme quoi vous pouvez améliorer sensiblement la
   classification en France ?
   2. Avez-vous partagé des résultats de ce que vous avez amélioré sur les
   zones dans lesquelles vous avez travaillé ? La classification des données
   bien sûr mais aussi les discussions avec les communautés. Pas "nous avons
   corrigé cette route" mais "voilà la situation avant et après, voilà ce que
   nous avons fait et pourquoi, voici des détails sur pourquoi c'est mieux
   maintenant..."
   3. Comment pouvez-vous garantir que vous prenez en compte la
   documentation française (qui peut apporter des adaptations/specificités) en
   plus des définitions OSM générales ?

I will answer on my own, giving my point of view. Thank you for reaching us
before doing anything at large scale. And yes of course you should put some
French translation if you want to have valuabe feedbacks, but don't be
surprised if we follow in French. I decided to answer in French and English
to make sure you got my point. This channel is a good channel to have such
discussion.

First of all I don't see why you can't add missing roads or realign them in
any part of the world as soon as you do it the right way and it is not
automated. OSM is an open project, adding a missing highway or a smooth
curve should not hurt anyone.

Now on the topic of changing road classification... In short I would not
interfere abroad. France road network is the result of a committed
community sharing their local knowledge, discussing and able to access high
quality imagery and open data sources. Also several tools have been
developped by French mappers in order to detect improvements and make some
QA, Osmose being one of them for road networks (even if opened worldwide it
is finetuned in France). Also, this community is very active and road
network classifcation is one of those hot topic we regularly see in this
mailing list. I have the feeling that we reached an operating point which
take into account OSM definitions and France specificities. I don't think
that adding a stranger and remote point of view would bring any good thing
here, but I may be wrong. It will probably more open edit wars. Of course
if you detect something and you think it is a wrong classification, feel
free to open discussion with us (in French) before guessing satelite
imagery don't fool you and is up to date.

Consequently here are some questions to you regarding road network
classification:

   1. Did you perform any study showing us that you can bring value to
   french OSM data classification?
   2. Did you share any consolidated results of what you improved in other
   areas you worked on? OSM data classification improvements of course but
   also good discussions with local communities. Not "we fixed this road" but
   "here is the situation before and after, this is what we've done and why,
   here are some details why this new situation is good..."
   3. How can you assert that you take France documentation in mind (wich
   might bring some specificities/adaptations), in addition to OSM world
   "default" documentation?
