Hi everyone

I had a long chat with Peter Miller of ITOWorld today who is a mine of
information and contacts regarding public transport both in the UK and
internationally. He reckons we could have a copy of the NAPTAN database
within about a week. It has approx 350K items and requires someone to
generate some code to import a subset of the data ( we can't import
everything for commercial reasons) and tag it suitably. The code would have
to be able to cope with weekly imports and eventually daily imports (
apparently there are about 100 changes a day. Peter is pleased we ( well
me, really) are showing an interest and I offered to project manage the
import and management as I can't code. Christophe and Ciaran are you up for
this? Or have you any pals in the Linux/computer science areas that would
like to have a crack at this- all code would be opensource. We could just
import W Mids to start with to perfect the technique of de-duping existing
bus-stops, or go for a big-bang approach - needs to be discussed. Peter
could find us a technical liaison. Opportunity to make a big contribution
(and a big splash!) to OSM nationally and potentially internationally as
there are loads of similar bus stop databases around the world complete with
a US vs Europe standards battle at the ISO.

Regards

Brian
