Hi everyone

You might have notice a lot of editing activity recently in Birmingham City
Centre. This is due to the arrival and loading of the aerial imagery we have
been talking about for so long.
Thanks are due to Andy for tiling the aerial imagery. Because of the
licensing restrictions we (Andy and me) have decided not to make the aerial
imagery publicly available via slippy map or WMS, but we are running it on
local web servers. If you can run a local web server on your editing
machine (i.e not visible to the internet) or if you're sophisticated and
rich enough to run a local non-internet-visible web server on a home LAN
behind a firewall, and want to help, then give us a shout.

To date I've been concentrating on improving road alignment which was very
poor in some areas, and building outlines which can be traced in a much more
accurate manner than the generalised outlines on offer from OS OpenData
StreetView. As the imagery is very recent it's also more accurate than
GoogleEarth or anything similar.

If there's a particular area of the City Centre where you've put in some
editing effort, you might want to revisit it to make sure I've not
messed anything up, particularly when it comes to POI and address nodes. The
aerial imagery extends generally to the outer ring road.

I'm hoping that once we've completed tracing data from the aerial imagery
we'll have the best-mapped city in the UK outside of London and Edinburgh
(maybe even better?)

Regards

Brian
