Brian,
Welcome,
Probably the best thing to do for starters is to read some of the wiki pages
here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_Guide
Having said that though perhaps the best opportunity to learn is to come and
try it with someone experienced.
A couple of suggestions if either are possible. We have two events coming
up. Firstly a social evening in Birmingham this Thursday, and secondly a
mapping day in Kidderminster on Sat 17th April. details of both are on our
local area page on the wiki, which is:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mappa_Mercia
Furthermore I've been mapping Bloxwich over the last few weeks as part of a
drive to get the whole of Walsall MDC completed. I'd be more than happy to
run out to Essington on a Saturday or Sunday morning sometime over the next
couple of months and meet up (I live in Sutton Coldfield). In fact perhaps I
can persuade some of the others in the area to do the same. We have plenty
still to map in the track of land between Wednesbury and you.
It can be difficult to know where to start, so please ask questions as you
need to, we will try to help.
Cheers
Andy
