If you approach from the north on the A3 you can see where they've 
started to make way for the tunnel approach, but they've only got as far 
as building their own access roads and cutting lots of trees down. Hence 
my original note that the mapping can't have been done by surveying. 
However, checking the history it looks like 80n was the original mapper 
-- one of the people I'd implicitly trust not to do anything silly.

So now I'm intrigued!

And Nick, your edits definitely aren't public -- the paths closer to 
Guildford you did all show up as anonymous.
