Hi all,
With thanks to Andy Robinson for the advice, I've signed up to the list in
order to ask if there are people around Durham who would like to participate
in a playful sort of mapping exercise that does not necessarily turn into
orthographic drawings. I am also announcing a series of tree-mapping surveys
in Birmingham's Highbury Park.
The Durham project is called 'Mapping the Necklace' and is driven by a
combination of agencies and local residents. The broad idea is that a
12-mile stretch of the River Wear (Finchale to Croxdale) has been designated
as 'virtual parkland' (in the sense of 'nearly' rather than 'digital'), and
is the setting for a diverse range of activities. The documentation of these
activities is a 'mapping' of experience onto some transferable format:
paper, film, video, musical scores, structures, and so on. The documentary
'evidence' will go on display in Newcastle at something called Design Of the
Time Showcase in October.
I am looking for people who want to do stuff in the park and document it in
whatever fashion they choose. More creative is better, but so is historical,
botanical, experiential, educational. Any and all technology is welcome,
from sticks & stones to whatever gadgets you can muster. The idea is
non-prescriptive, so long as there's a tangible recording/documentation of
the project.
Sound at all interesting?

This website includes a series of blog posts about who is doing what.
You're welcome to create a userID and add your own ideas, proposals,
feedback, queries.
The co-ordinators are named Becky and Claire. Feel free to make enquiries
with them, or come back to me via this list.
I am also coordinating a tree-mapping survey for Birmingham's Highbury Park.
We've done a little pilot, and are organising a further series over the
current year. The idea is to identify and document mature trees across the
park, then make the information available online to organisations like
EcoRecord, the local wildlife trust, schools and the general public.
In this case we are hoping to get accurate locations, and would be pleased
and grateful for the assistance from anyone who can help us get adequate
location/distance measurements.
More information about the project here:

and

The tree survey is a joint project between Highbury Park Friends, the
Birmingham Parks dept, local schools, and wildlife groups. As above, contact
via the website, or me via this list.
I hope this sounds like fun, and prompts a reply or two.
