[Talk-GB] A newbie question - 'What are you doing ?'

The explanation I've found best to use since most people understand it the fastest is to ask if they know what the Wikipedia is, and then compare OSM to Wikipedia by "instead of an encyclopaedia that anyone can edit, it's a map that anyone can edit".
