I imported some OS OpenData coastline stuff not long after they came
out. I wrote up a wiki page about using the OS OpenData vector stuff
here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Using_OS_Shapefiles . I expect
there are better ways than this now.
I know that tracing Bing can be better in some places. Where the
coastline is changing quickly, such as parts of the fast-eroding east
coast for example, Bing, being newer, is better in my experience. You
need local knowledge or a survey to establish where the high-water mark
is (where coastline should be placed) from the imagery. Sometimes that
should be part-way up the beach on the strand line but sometimes at the
base of a cliff or seawall.
