I think there was a prolonged discussion about this a couple of years 
ago that I got bored with.

But my point was that even though it may have a designated number, it 
isn't of any use to anyone other than traffic engineers because it isn't 
used on the ground. Like C numbers.

(For those that don't know, the main route of the A14 from Cambridge 
turns west at Huntingdon to head for Kettering, but it is an active turn 
off at a grade separated junction to do this. That's because the A14 was 
cobbled together from some new road and some existing road a few years 
back to form a midlands - east coast link road. Originally, this main 
road was the A604 between Cambridge and the A1 along this odd section; 
the western part of Kettering did not exist; and what is now the A422 
west from Cambridge to the A1 at St Neots (and then on to Northampton), 
and A14 east to Ipswich, was all the A45... which now, instead of 
running east from Northampton runs north-east to Wellingborough and 
joins the A14; quite why they didn't renumber the continuation of this 
road to Peterborough also A45 I don't know - it remains A605).
