I have just come across a user (Peter Wright [1]) adding his own
recommended routes across open access land in Scotland, for example
Changeset #12151621 [2]. His routes are actually published in a book
"Walking in Wilderness", available at your favourite bookseller for
the low low price of £7.99 [3].
Am I right in thinking that unmarked routes of this kind are not accepted?
He is adding them as single continuous ways tagged highway=footpath
and named WwW 26, which is obviously also wrong, but a separate
matter.

--------------------------
The book is Walking with Wilderness (hence the WwW), and it looks like
he is probably the author in which case as long as the routes are
entirely his own and not "derived work" then it should be ok from a
copyright point of view. This does not however mean that they should
be added. Generally we limit walking trails to only those that are
signposted (e.g. Heart of England Way, Millennium Walks) otherwise we
could end up with 100s of walking trails. Here in area surrounding
Coventry there is "A Coventry Way" which is signposted so is mapped,
and then a few shorter circular walks have been mapped by the same
group that I don't think are signposted. I have left these, but if
everyone added their favourite walk there could be a problem.
If they are added as single continuous ways then make sure he is not
tracing over existing ways (and therefore creating duplication).
