I'm enjoying all of the discussion, lots of excellent points have been
raised.
Firstly, Rob, in my line of work if I've achieved something like an output
in a single day, that's been a very productive one so well done.
I think addr:substreet is probably a good addition as it's suitably
unencumbered with meaning from inside or outside OSM. It also largely
sidesteps the issue of whether a particular feature is or isn't a street,
which isn't always obvious. Can you elaborate on using it with parentstreet
rather than street. I guess this is about avoiding housenumber being put
with street by unaware apps and so probably a good idea, but on the
negative side we'll not be using any recognisable tags above locality for
these apps.
Can you add something about room / flat numbers to the algorithm (or do you
think we should use unit)?
I wasn't sure about the order of 'locality' elements, particularly suburb
above hamlet and village, but maybe it doesn't matter too much with the
focus being postal addresses.
Without wishing to drag you off on a tangent, can this new tool use what we
know to ask what street (and substreet) the points with the same postcode
are referring to, rather than per point? This would obviously be more
efficient and could help use the right street where this is not obvious on
the ground, and could be coupled with a 'these don't seem to be the same
street' answer.
*Sarah*, do you have a suggestion (or know what's been used elsewhere) for
building complexes off a street?
I was being slow but I've understood Sarah's suggestion: where the
geographic address conflicts or adds to the postal address, also use
is_in:. This seems like a good way of getting around these differences. The
wiki on addr: could really do with clarifying that it's about postal
addresses and it doesn't matter if it's not really a suburb or city, these
are rough labels for the lines on an envelope.
