[Talk-GB] New 'cycling' layer - CyclOSM

Is that correct? If it’s a bike lane shared with all other traffic then that tag seems superfluous
1057’s have a number of legitimate uses of varying utility -
- marking advised position for cycling. Encouraging cyclists to take a central lane position ahead of a junction or obstruction. (Eg continuing a cycle lane around a bus stop). Often done very badly - frequently see them painted very close to parked cars so that would be at risk from dooring
- as part of the marking along a signed cycle route. They can, usefully, give some comfort that you are still on a route between junctions and wayfinding signposts or road markings or give additional making at a junction (in addition to a signpost) By themselves they do not constitute a ‘route’ marking in my view.
- alerting drivers to the potential presence of cyclists. You often seem them painted across a junction,. This is just ’something must be done’ engineering and pretty much pointless - as the OP says, drivers should expect people on bikes everywhere not just where these are painted.
