[Talk-GB] Mapping in South Wales - Updates

Thanks for this summary, CJ.

Most definitely, the main thing is to get every building mapped, so that we
have the basemap. It would be great to get your help doing this. Good to
understand a bit more about how the tasking manager works for us here in
the UK. I am happy to not use the swiss tasking manager, if we feel we are
happier with the quality of UK mapping, the trade-off being the number of
remote-mappers it's possible to engage. Perhaps I could bring in some
remote mappers from the HOT community to map under the direction of OSMUK?
Don't know how that works, to be honest. Also, would there be a case here
for OSMUK leading a task on the HOT tasking manager...? I have no idea, but
given that this project has a 'humanitarian' background, could this work?

Re. What we actually want mapped: you make the point that StreetComplete
can only augment features that are already showing. OMK is the same, and
that's why I have seldom used it in the field for data collection (see ODK
below). But I was thinking (and you agree) that it's a good entry-point to
start from.

To go into a little more depth about possible methodologies:

The possibilities (so far in my research) suggest a few tiers of
engagement, and so a few different tools. I was imagining how these would
play out. Incidentally, my use of the term 'remote-mappers' above refers to
digital iD or JOSM mappers, as opposed to 'field data collectors'.

This is a summary:

Remote-Mapping:
JOSM - User: OSMUK, HOT validators - one or two Public Health team
specialists, project manager/leads
iD - User: OSMUK remote mappers (Possibly HOT tasking manager
remote-mappers??)

Field Mapping/Data Collection:
StreetComplete - User: Schoolkids, youth, mobilised/managed community
members
OSMAnd - User: If the community mobilisation happens around selected local
features to map, it would be hoped that community members would use OSM
notes in OSMAnd - through careful training.
Maps.Me - User: again, more accessible but less powerful, so this would
depend on the nature of data content needed
ODK:

[A note on ODK:
ODK has been very useful in humanitarian data collection campaigns. It is
what I am used to, and have worked with it a lot. I have co-devised careful
data cleaning, moderation and upload workflows which have led to reliable
OSM data-sets over large geographical areas (districts/counties/chiefdoms).
We have used it to collect demographic and map data, with the majority
ending-up on OSM, but some on Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX-UNOCHA), and
some staying confidential/secure (i.e. medical data). We have co-devised
data models to optimise OSM tagging in the survey mechanisms. I'm very
happy to go through this process with slides and discussion if anybody
would like.

So I hope that ODK might be used by: deployed healthcare/community workers,
trained and managed by data collection specialists (e.g. MapUganda and
other ODK/OSM-experienced GIS people), where OSM data is added in a careful
data cleaning process. This may-or may not- prove appropriate in this
context. (I have been looking for data collectors with ODK/OSM experience
in the UK, but no luck so far - SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!!? )]

In other news, I'm listening to some interesting material on COVID and
mental health, where digital engagement/mobilisation of communities is
cited as a good 'self-help' style therapy.

Best wishes,

Rupert
