  Thinking of basins, as well as deep areas of water for boats (in a few 
contexts, not just canals) standard uses include "river/stream/drainage 
basin" as a synonym for a river's catchment area, and use as just a 
local depression in the land is also supported.  So it's pretty generic. 
Too generic? Probably  not
