What is the UK legal and OSM situation with regard to roller skates?

An article recently suggested sales of roller skates are booming.

Is it legal to use roller skates on a public footpath? On a cycleway? On 
a bridleway?

Physically of course it needs a hard surface, but that is a separate 
issue to the legal access.

As far as I can find, the only wiki reference to roller skates is as a 
sport, such as a roller skating rink:

Is roller_skates=yes ok on a highway?
