Good article link - I've seem a few posts from the RantyHighwayman on 
Twitter, and the detailed design notes on CYCLOPS don't disappoint.

The improvement at Rake Lane is the pedestrian and cycle infra are 
completely separated with good design reducing conflict. The use of 
cycle lights has spread to Newcastle city centre, but at Rake Lane all 
crossings are Zebra + Parallel.
